Seminar by the Sea
Dates: October 26-28, 2012
The Life and Imagination of C. S. Lewis
C. S. Lewis (1898-1963) was one of the most widely read Christian authors of the twentieth century, and his works of fiction and nonfiction continue to be influential for Christian readers today. His writing style combined reason and imagination in a unique and captivating way, and many Christians can point to a book by Lewis as playing a key role in their conversion or spiritual growth. This seminar will look at Lewis' biography and historical context and at representative works (both fiction and nonfiction) in order to identify some of Lewis' key ideas and literary techniques. Attendees will gain a greater understanding of and appreciation for Lewis' life and works and the ways in which he communicated the gospel message as an "apostle to the skeptics."
Gary L. Tandy is Professor of English and Associate Director of the Academic Resource Center at George Fox University. He has published essays and reviews on Lewis' work and Christian spirituality in The Bulletin of the New York C. S. Lewis Society, The Christian Chronicle, and Christianity and Literature. His book, The Rhetoric of Certitude: C. S. Lewis's Nonfiction Prose, was published by Kent State University Press in 2009, and his article, "The Stylistic Achievement of Mere Christianity," recently appeared in the Fall, 2011, issue of Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal.
Gary has taught writing and literature for twenty years at three different Christian universities. He and his wife, Janet, live in Newberg and are the parents of three children. They attend East County Church of Christ, where Gary has served as elder, Bible class teacher, and occasional preacher. Gary and Janet enjoy trips to the Oregon coast and the Ashland Shakespeare Festival and following the Portland Trailblazers.
